Free crochet scarf pattern using basic Tunisian crochet stitches that creates a beautiful texture for a chunky crochet scarf pattern.

The Tunisian Pathways Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern that produces a richly textured rectangle scarf worked in Tunisian arrowhead stitch and Tunisian purl stitch on a chunky 10mm hook. It is written for adults and works up beautifully in 2 skeins of bulky yarn, making it a satisfying project whether you are new to Tunisian crochet or looking to build your skills.

From Inspiration to Stitch: The Story Behind My Tunisian Pathways Scarf

I was initially testing out how the arrowhead stitch would look with other Tunisian crochet stitches. I tried swatching with Tunisian simple stitch but didn’t find the contrast of stitches interesting. Then I attempted with the Tunisian purl stitch and really liked how the stitches complemented each other. My favorite part about the scarf is the lacy nature of the arrowhead stitch making it a perfect scarf for transitioning to Fall weather while not being too warm and bulky. It’s also a short scarf so it can be styled with a lot of different looks easily. A shorter scarf doesn’t create layers and layers of fabric around the neck, making it comfortable under coats and jackets.

I chose this beautiful Lion Brand Yarn x Two of Wands Hue and Me in Grapefruit because I thought it would be the perfect color for Fall!

Here is a comparison of the design process vs. finished piece:

A short crochet scarf can actually be more practical and wearable than a traditional long scarf, especially for everyday use. You can wrap or tie it once and go—no long ends to fuss with. It’s also easy to style since it can be worn around the neck, tied loosely, tucked into a jacket, or styled almost like a neckerchief.

There’s also a design advantage: Tunisian crochet naturally creates a dense, textured fabric, so you don’t necessarily need a very long scarf to get warmth and visual impact. I wanted to create something intentional, practical, and satisfying to make.

Since this crochet scarf is shorter, it uses less yarn: This can make the project more affordable and give you more freedom to use a special or luxury yarn. With Tunisian crochet in particular, a shorter scarf can let the stitch pattern be the star without requiring a huge amount of fabric.

A shorter scarf is also satisfying if you want a finished project without committing to dozens of hours of stitching. Since it works up quickly, you can work on it while traveling or waiting. It’s also great for gifting because it’s relatively quick and economical to make.
