Tunisian crochet pillow pattern Inspiration:

A couple of months ago, I was invited to participate in a fun challenge by Hobbii Yarn, the Cozy Challenge and I had to hop on! The challenge was based on quilt and log-cabin inspired designs – and we were invited to explore and interpret this theme through our pattern designing skills.

I chose to create a Tunisian crochet pillow using Hobbii Amigo Chunky (the perfect cozy yarn with nice stitch definition) to represent the Cozy theme. I decided on these beautiful blue-green colors that worked so well together. I chose Patina Green and Petroleum Green. Initially, I did a poll to ask whether I should create separate patches to attach or do surface slip stitch and you all liked the think slip stitch idea. This pillow has a rustic look! This was my first time attempting surface slip stitch on the Tunisian full stitch.

A huge thank you to Hobbii Yarn for providing the yarn for this pattern!

Bind off. Leave a 6 in tail and cut yarn, weave in the ends on the wrong side.
Surface slip stitch as seen in the pictures and video tutorial on one panel. Written instructions are below.

Note:
If you find it difficult to see which stitch to work into as you work the surface slip stitch lines, weave a scrap piece of yarn in a contrasting color through the stitches before you begin the surface slip stitches as seen below:

With the 10 mm crochet hook, and the right side of the panel facing out, count to the 13th st in the foundation row and join Col B into the front loop of the stitch, make a slip knot and go into the front loop of the stitch directly above the previous stitch and sl st. Continue across making sure to go into the aligned stitches.

When you reach the last st, surface sl st, then work a surface sl st into the front loop of the horizontal bar directly above the previous stitch. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn. Join Col B into the front loop of the 16th st in the foundation row and repeat steps to create a second vertical line.

Turn the panel sideways and count to the 16th row from the foundation row, go under both loops and join Col B, go into the front loop of the next st and surface sl st. Continue working into sts across making sure they are aligned in a straight line. When you reach the vertical surface sl st lines, work under both colors and continue surface sl st across.  Count to the 19th row from the foundation row and repeat steps as above to create a second horizontal line.

A huge thanks to DMC Crafts for generously providing yarn support for this design! I absolutely loved working with the DMC Nova Vita yarn. It definitely was an arm workout but well worth it! If you prefer an easier yarn, you could go with the Bernat Maker Big yarn although the texture and feel may vary as the fiber contents are different.

Inspiration for the design

I can’t believe it has been a whole YEAR since my hubby and I became home owners, it feels like just yesterday when we were researching all the things and getting ready to go from apartment living to our own house! I am so grateful we are at a stage where we were able to do that and we landed up in a great place with amazing neighbors and I love our house. One of the first yarn packages I received at our new house was from DMC Crafts to give their Nova Vita yarn a try. They sent me 2 skeins of their neutral color and I loved it so much. I made the Simple Seed Coasters with it, you can find the free pattern here. Then I asked for some more yarn in colors that would go with my home decor theme for the living room.

From the moment we got our couches, I knew I wanted to dress them up with my own specially designed modern crochet pillows and here we are a few months later! I am SO excited to finally release this pattern out into the world and I hope you LOVE making it as much as I did!

This pattern is for a beginner-friendly reversible Tunisian crochet pillow pattern. The wrong side and right side will be showcased to reveal the beautiful texture. It is made with the Tunisian simple stitch with some basic colorwork and the project can be completed in a few hours to elevate the chic and cozy factor to any living space!
