Spring Blooms Vest – Womens Crochet Vest Pattern Inspiration:

The theme for the submission call was Spring and my mind immediately went to a vest because they are the perfect layering pieces for Spring weather! I also thought about designing a scarf but I wanted to challenge myself and I am so glad I did because it turned out so beautiful, just as I had imagined it!

Perfect for transitioning to Spring, the Spring Blooms Vest will add the perfect touch to your Spring wardrobe. It can be styled in many different ways to add a handmade touch to your Springwear! Beautiful honeycomb stitches complement the simplicity of the Tunisian simple stitch and create a beautiful texture. The basketweave pockets add an interesting and functional dimension to the piece. This vest is worked up in panels from bottom up. Don’t be intimidated by the Tunisian crochet techniques, video tutorials are included for all the stitches and techniques!

SPRING BLOOMS VEST – WOMENS CROCHET VEST PATTERN MY DESIGNING PROCESS:

BEGINNING OF SPRING BLOOMS VEST, THE BORDER

Sometimes the hardest part is starting! I knew that I wanted to create something with some texture and color contrast. I absolutely LOVE the Tunisian honeycomb stitch and knew I had to use it somewhere so I decided to add it as a border. The honeycomb stitch makes a perfect border because it doesn’t curl like the Tunisian simple stitch. I also wanted it to be in a contrasting color. I had a hard time deciding which color I wanted for the border, the darker or lighter color. I decided the dark would look better and I’m glad I chose it! I’m really happy with how it turned out! include beginning of vest honeycomb border pic

PART 2: LESSONS LEARNED

I learned a LOT with this design.

One of the biggest things I learned is that binding off is much easier and gives a cleaner finish for shaping than just decreasing stitches. I had to frog several times before I figured this out but I’m so glad I did!

I also learned that it’s easy to overlook the length/row count of panels (oops!). You would think this is obvious but it’s so easy to overlook when you’re working up a garment so it’s important to keep measuring!

All that frogging was worth it, I love how it turned out!

Check out this cute womens crochet vest pattern. Practice the basic Tunisian crochet stitches with this vest pattern for women.

PART 3: BASKETWEAVE POCKETS

One of my favorite parts of this design is the contrast textured pockets! I knew I wanted some subtle texture and these basketweave pockets turned out just as I had envisioned them!

The basketweave stitch is such a fun stitch and it really mimics the knit basketweave stitch so well.

Check out this cute womens crochet vest pattern. Practice the basic Tunisian crochet stitches with this vest pattern for women.

PART 4: IMPOSTER SYNDROME

Somewhere along the way, I had major doubts creep up as I was designing this vest. I kept wondering if the shaping is right, if it’s even going to fit. Is anyone going to even like it? And even after I had completed making it, I was so nervous when I submitted everything and I even emailed the Crochet Foundry team to ask if everything looks good. I am so grateful to the team for validating and appreciating my work! And now to see it published in the April issue and seeing the pictures is such an amazing feeling. I’m so proud of myself for working through it all and designing this piece and I hope you all love it too!

Pattern Instructions:

Ch 7 with Color A

Row 1 (Foundation Row): Pick up a loop in the back bump of each chain. Complete normal RetP. (7 sts)

Row 2 to 36: TSS across (7 sts). (or continue Tss across for the length needed to match your head circumference) For reference, my head circumference is 21.5 inches: and I continued the Tss rows for 20 inches. Leaving a long tail,, cut yarn (approximately 8 to 10 inches). This tail will be used later for seaming up the ear warmer.

Starting at one end of the ear warmer, count 2 rows up and count to the 4th stitch (this will be the center stitch). With Color B Make Bo in this st. Moving vertically, skip 1 st, sl st into next st and make Bo in the same st. Refer to this video for how to make a surface bobble st. Continue making bobbles until there is only 1 st remaining. Leaving a 6 in. tail, cut yarn. Weave in end on the backside of ear warmer. With the wrong side facing you, join the ends of the ear warmer together with whip st or using your preferred method of seaming using the tail left at the beginning. Turn right side out and enjoy your finished make!
