Free Crochet Rug Pattern Instructions:

Ch 40 with Col A

Row 1 (Foundation Row): Pick up a loop in the back bump of each chain. Complete normal RetP. (40 sts)

Rows 2 to 47: Tss across for each row. The stitch count should be 40 at the end of each row. Bind off and pull remaining yarn through the last loop and leave a 6 in. tail, cut yarn. Weave in loose ends.

Using Col B, Sc around evenly, completing (sc, ch 1, sc) into each corner. Join to first st in the round. Repeat another round of sc stitches as above. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn. Weave in all loose ends.

Refer to the cross stitch video tutorial from the notes section above and follow the cross stitch chart below:

COLOR CHART:

How to anchor the yarn with your first stitch:

Cut a long piece of yarn and double it over like this and weave onto the needle.

Check out this free rectangular crochet rug pattern for a nursery or kid's room made with Tunisian crochet simple stitch and cross stitch.

Push the needle through your first stitch from back of work to front of work.

Check out this free rectangular crochet rug pattern for a nursery or kid's room made with Tunisian crochet simple stitch and cross stitch.

Don’t pull all the way through, leave the loop on the back side like this.

Check out this free rectangular crochet rug pattern for a nursery or kid's room made with Tunisian crochet simple stitch and cross stitch.

Work through the next stitch and push the needle from front to back, pulling the yarn as you go. Make sure to hold down the loop in the back so it doesn’t come out.

Check out this free rectangular crochet rug pattern for a nursery or kid's room made with Tunisian crochet simple stitch and cross stitch.

This is how the stitch will look in the front.

Check out this free rectangular crochet rug pattern for a nursery or kid's room made with Tunisian crochet simple stitch and cross stitch.

Now take the needle and pull it through the loop in the back and pull the yarn all the way through the loop.

Check out this free rectangular crochet rug pattern for a nursery or kid's room made with Tunisian crochet simple stitch and cross stitch.

Tighten the stitch and now your yarn is anchored to your piece. You should do this every time you work with a new strand. I usually work stitches until I have a 6 in. tail remaining (enough to weave in) then I start a new strand. For this project, I used a 40 in. strand doubled over each time.

Continue working cross stitches as soon in the color chart. Weave in all loose ends and cut yarn.

Tunisian crochet pillow pattern Inspiration:

A couple of months ago, I was invited to participate in a fun challenge by Hobbii Yarn, the Cozy Challenge and I had to hop on! The challenge was based on quilt and log-cabin inspired designs – and we were invited to explore and interpret this theme through our pattern designing skills.

I chose to create a Tunisian crochet pillow using Hobbii Amigo Chunky (the perfect cozy yarn with nice stitch definition) to represent the Cozy theme. I decided on these beautiful blue-green colors that worked so well together. I chose Patina Green and Petroleum Green. Initially, I did a poll to ask whether I should create separate patches to attach or do surface slip stitch and you all liked the think slip stitch idea. This pillow has a rustic look! This was my first time attempting surface slip stitch on the Tunisian full stitch.

Bind off. Leave a 6 in tail and cut yarn, weave in the ends on the wrong side.
Surface slip stitch as seen in the pictures and video tutorial on one panel. Written instructions are below.

Note:
If you find it difficult to see which stitch to work into as you work the surface slip stitch lines, weave a scrap piece of yarn in a contrasting color through the stitches before you begin the surface slip stitches as seen below:

Need Tunisian crochet pillow patterns? Practice the Tunisian full stitch with the Cozy Zen Pillow an easy crochet pillow pattern.

With the 10 mm crochet hook, and the right side of the panel facing out, count to the 13th st in the foundation row and join Col B into the front loop of the stitch, make a slip knot and go into the front loop of the stitch directly above the previous stitch and sl st. Continue across making sure to go into the aligned stitches.

When you reach the last st, surface sl st, then work a surface sl st into the front loop of the horizontal bar directly above the previous stitch. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn. Join Col B into the front loop of the 16th st in the foundation row and repeat steps to create a second vertical line.

Turn the panel sideways and count to the 16th row from the foundation row, go under both loops and join Col B, go into the front loop of the next st and surface sl st. Continue working into sts across making sure they are aligned in a straight line. When you reach the vertical surface sl st lines, work under both colors and continue surface sl st across.  Count to the 19th row from the foundation row and repeat steps as above to create a second horizontal line.
