Try out this fun and easy Tunisian crochet twist headband made with Tunisian knit and purl stitches using a traditional crochet hook.
Inspiration
Lately, I have been challenging myself to design patterns that can use the basic Tunisian crochet stitches and a traditional hook. I realize that not everyone has the tools needed to practice Tunisian crochet and may not be ready to invest in new hooks! I loved working with this 100% wool yarn, it gives beautiful stitch definition! I also recorded a full video tutorial to go along with the pattern so you can easily follow along! I love how closely the Tunisian crochet knit and Tunisian crochet purl stitches mimic actual knit stitches! It’s the perfect pattern to work on if you want to something that looks like knitted crochet.

This headband tunisian crochet pattern uses a few Tunisian crochet techniques. Use the following video tutorials as needed:
- Pattern rows are Forward pass instructions.
- The following instructions are implied:
- The loop already on the hook at the beginning of the row counts as the first st.
- Always Tunisian simple stitch in the last st of the row, being sure to work under both loops of the st.
- Return Pass: Follow the foundation row and each row with the Return Pass in the same color unless a color change is needed.
- Return Pass Instructions: Ch 1, *yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.
- Return Pass Instructions: Ch 1, *yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.
- Note: Measure your gauge swatch across unstretched and stretched. Note the two numbers and subtract to find the difference. This is how much you will need to subtract from the head circumference measurement to determine total length.
- Example:
- The Gauge swatch stretched is 11 in. and unstretched it is 8.5 in. 11-8.5 = 3.5 in. You will need to subtract 3.5 in. from the head circumference measurement.
- 21 in. head circumference – 3.5 in. = 17.5 in. This means you will need to work the piece to a total length of 17.5 in. Substitute this number for X in the pattern below.
- Example:
- Note: Depending on stretchiness of yarn and head size of the toddler/child, you may want to decrease width by decreasing 1 or 2 stitches when you chain.

Bind off and leave a 12 in. tail, cut yarn. With the right side facing out, fold in half with edges sandwiched between each other as shown in the video tutorial and below.
Whip stitch across, going through all edges. Refer to the video tutorial for clarification.
Weave in all loose ends.
