Design Inspiration behind this FREE Crochet Shawl Pattern

I recently came across the Tunisian crochet join-as-you-go technique where Tunisian crochet panels are joined as you work them up. This method is super convenient especially if you’ve always wanted to learn Tunisian crochet but don’t have a Tunisian crochet hook. This technique is worked up using a traditional crochet hook and only working a small number of stitches per panel!

First, a huge thanks to Furls for providing the gorgeous materials for this project including the beautiful Wander yarn and Streamline Metal Gold Hook!

When I was approached for this opportunity, I initially wanted to design a Ruana but then life happened and I didn’t have enough time for a full garment design so I modified my plans and decided on this rectangular shawl instead. It was so satisfying working up each panel. I knew I wanted it to have lots of texture and a good flow in the color palette I was using! It turned out even better than I imagined! I finished off with a single crochet back loop only border and some fringe on the shot edges! I hope you love the design as much as I do! Yarn:

Furls Wander Yarn – Size 4 worsted weight; 3.5 oz/100 g, 120 yds/109 m; 100% Premium Acrylic; This pattern requires the following amounts of yards of each color:

Col A – Velvet 360 yds

Col B – Alabaster 240 yds

Col C – Dragonfruit 360 yds

Col D – Moonbeam 240 yds

Col E – Mist 120 yds

 Hook:

• Size H 5.0 mm crochet hook, I used a Furls Gold Streamline Metal Hook

Notions: 

• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Measuring tape
• Blocking Materials (T-pins, Blocking boards, etc.)

Gauge:

• Gauge is 20 sts over 16 rows in Tunisian simple stitch for a 4 x 4 in. square. 

Finished Size:

• The finished size is 78 in. long by 16 in. wide
• The wrap can be made wider by completing more panels in the same pattern.

Abbreviations:

Ch: Chain

St(s): Stitch(es)

Rep: Repeat

Col: Color

Tss: Tunisian simple stitch

Tps: Tunisian purl stitch

Tfs: Tunisian full stitch

Crochet Shawl Pattern Notes:

This pattern is for a beginner-friendly textured Tunisian crochet color block wrap. It’s the perfect accessory for your transition wardrobe from winter to spring. This project can be completed with a traditional crochet hook as it is worked in Tunisian crochet join as you go panels. Practice some basic Tunisian crochet stitches while creating a cozy wrap!

How to bind off in Tunisian crochet:  

• Pattern rows are Forward pass instructions.

• The following instructions are implied:
  • The loop already on the hook at the beginning of the row counts as the first st. 
  • Always Tunisian simple stitch in the last st of the row, being sure to work under both loops of the st. When joining panels, remember to go under both loops of the first stitch of the same row in the previous panel.
  • After joining a new color, always cut the old color yarn.
    

• Return Pass: Follow the foundation row and each row with the Return Pass in the same color unless a color change is needed.
  • Normal Return Pass Instructions: Ch 1, *yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.
  • Return Pass Instructions: *Yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from *until 1 loop remains on the hook.
  • Special Return Pass Instructions (Saloniki stitch): Yo, pull through 3 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops* rep until there are two loops remaining on your hook, yo, pull through 2 loops
    
• For a lighter summer wrap, this pattern can be completed with a finer yarn or same yarn and a larger hook to make a wrap that has more flow to the fabric to make it less warm.

Section A – Honeycomb (10 sts)

Section B – Purl (10 sts)

Section C – Saloniki (9 sts)

Section D – Simple (11 sts)

Section E – Saloniki (repeat Section C) (9 sts)

Free Crochet Shawl Pattern instructions

SECTION A – Honeycomb with Col A

With Col A ch 10

Foundation row: Pick up a loop in the back bump of each st across. 

Complete normal RetP. (10 sts)

Row 2: *tss, tps rep from * across to last st, work last st as normal.

Complete normal RetP. (10 sts)

Row 3: *tps, tss rep from * across to last st, work last st as normal.

Complete normal RetP. (10 sts)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the panel measures 78 in. (10 sts)

Bind off. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn.

SECTION B – Purl stitch with Col B

Join Col B to the first stitch of the first row of the section A panel and ch 10

Foundation row: Pick up a loop in the back bump of each st across until the last st, work last st into the first st of the first row of Section A to join the panels.

Complete RetP. (10 sts)

Row 2: Tps across to the last st, work last st into the first st of the second row of Section A to continue joining the panels. 

Complete RetP. (10 sts)

Repeat row 2 and work the last st of each row into the first stitch of the corresponding row in the previous panel. Continue working rows until you reach the end of the Section A panel. Bind off. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn.

SECTION C – Saloniki with Col C:

Join Col C to first st of first row of the Section B panel and ch 9

Foundation row: Pick up a loop in the back bump of each st across until the last st, work last st into the first st of the first row of Section B to join the panels.

Complete RetP. (9 sts)

Row 2: Tss, Tfs 2* Rep * to the end of the row, work the last stitch into the first stitch of the second row of Section B panel (14 loops on hook).  Complete special RetP. (9 sts)

Special Return Pass: Yo, pull through 3 loops, yo, pull through 2 loops* rep until there are two loops remaining on your hook, yo, pull through 2 loops.
 
Repeat Row 2 and work the last st of each row into the first stitch of the corresponding row in the previous panel. Continue working rows until you reach the end of the Section B panel. Bind off, leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn.

SECTION D – Simple Stitch with Col D:

Join Col D to the first stitch of the first row of the Section C panel and ch 11

Foundation row: Pick up a loop in the back bump of each st across until the last st, work last st into the first st of the first row of Section C to join the panels.

Complete RetP. (11 sts)

Row 2: Tss across to the last st, work last st into the first st of the second row of Section C to continue joining the panels. 

Complete RetP. (11 sts)

Repeat row 2 and work the last st of each row into the first stitch of the corresponding row in the previous panel. Continue working rows until you reach the end of the Section C panel. Bind off. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn.

SECTION E – Saloniki with Col C

Join Col C to first st of the first row of the Section D panel and ch 9
Repeat instructions for Section C.

SECTION F – Purl with Col B

Join Col B to first st of the first row of the Section E panel and ch 10
Repeat instructions for Section B.

SECTION G – Honeycomb with Col A

Join Col A into the first st of the first row of the Section F panel and ch 10

Foundation row: Pick up a loop in the back bump of each st across. 

Complete RetP. (10 sts)

Row 2: *tss, tps rep from * across to last st, work last st as normal.

Complete RetP. (10 sts)

Row 3: *tps, tss rep from * across to last st, work last st as normal.

Complete RetP. (10 sts)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 and work the last st of each row into the first stitch of the corresponding row in the previous panel. Continue working rows until you reach the end of the Section F panel. (10 sts)

Bind off. Leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn.

Crochet Shawl Pattern Finishing touches:

Border:

With the right side of the project facing, join Col E, work scBLO around working (scBLO, ch1, scBLO) into corners. Sl st to first scBLO, leave a 6 in. tail and cut yarn. Continue working rounds by repeating border instructions in the following color pattern: Col B, Col C, Col D, Col A.

Fringe:

With the right side of the project facing, attach fringe to the short edges in the following color pattern: Col A, Col D, Col C, Col B (repeat until all fringe is attached).

Weave in all loose ends, cut yarn. Steam block and lay flat to dry.
