Design Inspiration behind this FREE Crochet Shawl Pattern

I recently came across the Tunisian crochet join-as-you-go technique where Tunisian crochet panels are joined as you work them up. This method is super convenient especially if you’ve always wanted to learn Tunisian crochet but don’t have a Tunisian crochet hook. This technique is worked up using a traditional crochet hook and only working a small number of stitches per panel!

First, a huge thanks to Furls for providing the gorgeous materials for this project including the beautiful Wander yarn and Streamline Metal Gold Hook!

When I was approached for this opportunity, I initially wanted to design a Ruana but then life happened and I didn’t have enough time for a full garment design so I modified my plans and decided on this rectangular shawl instead. It was so satisfying working up each panel. I knew I wanted it to have lots of texture and a good flow in the color palette I was using! It turned out even better than I imagined! I finished off with a single crochet back loop only border and some fringe on the shot edges! I hope you love the design as much as I do! Keep reading for the free pattern and where to purchase the PDF!

About the Shawl Pattern:

This pattern is for an intermediate textured Tunisian crochet color block shawl with instructions for a shawlette version! It’s the perfect accessory for your transition wardrobe from winter to spring. Practice some basic Tunisian crochet stitches while creating a cozy shawl! This pattern has been tech edited by Erin from Yarn Matter and has also been tested by several testers!

When I initially started working on this shawl, I had no idea what it would look like. I truly let the yarn and stitches just guide me and each section came to be! I was provided the yarn from Hobbii for this design as part of their No Shades of Grey Campaign where we were inspired to create a colorful project. I absolutely loved working with the Metallico yarn they provided me with! Although, my absolute favorite is their Pearly Haze yarn, this one comes in as a close second! They are very similar in the look and feel but I think Pearly Haze has a slightly more shiny effect! I absolutely love how all the colors came together to create the best contrast! My favorite in the Metallico line was the Rose Gold color!

In the Pearly Haze line, my favorite was the Teal color!

This shawl is a great sampler project because it is made with a few fun stitches including: Tunisian simple stitch, Tunisian knit stitch, Tunisian purl stitch, Tunisian honeycomb stitch, and Tunisian Two-Tone Simple Stitch! Design Inspiration:

Like many of my fellow cocheters, I am waiting for Fall to arrive because I am done with this heat! Also Fall is my absolute favorite season for so many reasons. One reason is that my birthday comes in Fall! I love the crisp cool breeze in the Fall, the weather is just perfect for crocheting. I designed this pattern with that cool Autumn breeze in mind. Something to drape around you as you crunch those Fall leaves and have your Apple Cider/Pumpkin Lattes. Ps. I cannot do Pumpkin flavored anything although I don’t mind pumpkins floating around as decor! You could also wear the Autumn Diamonds Cape as you sit by a campfire/bonfire roasting some marshmallows.

This free crochet cape pattern is a collaboration for an ongoing Blog Hop hosted by Crochet Foundry Magazine. You can find a lot of amazing free patterns featured over on the blog hop here. I chose to design this gorgeous cape using the Wander Yarn because I have loved working with it in the past. I also designed a Color block Wrap last year for Furls Crochet using this yarn and I absolutely loved how it turned out. You can find the Colors of the Wind Wrap pattern here.

I knew I wanted to design something that doesn’t require a Tunisian crochet hook so I went with the Entrelac technique which I recently became hooked on (no pun intended). You can find a complete 3-part series that takes you through the technique over on my YouTube Channel which I highly recommend you watch before getting started. Check out the Tunisian Crochet Entrelac Playlist here. I have included a FULL photo tutorial as part of this pattern which you’ll find throughout the written instructions.

I added an oversized hood to give a dramatic effect although the hood is optional. You will need a Tunisian crochet hook for the hood. I also wanted to incorporate the honeycomb stitch in some way because it’s my favorite Tunisian crochet stitch. I used it to add a band to the hood and I love the contrast against the Tunisian simple stitch.

Furls Crochet 12th Birthday Sale ends June 30th, shop now!

This design was a bit of a challenge because the Entrelac stitch is different than just straight Tunisian crochet since you are working in blocks and it gives a chevron/jagged effect to the finished project. I wanted to keep one edge straight to counter that effect so I added an entrelac edging and finished it off with a single crochet border all around to add a finished look.

I hope you love the design and love making your own Autumn Diamonds Cape! Please don’t forget to tag me on Instagram @noorsknits and Facebook @noorsknits1 if you make it!

This pattern is for an advanced beginner textured Tunisian crochet entrelac hooded cape! It’s the perfect accessory for your Fall wardrobe. Practice some basic Tunisian crochet stitches while creating a cozy cape! The best part is you don’t need a Tunisian crochet hook for the cape! You will need one to make the hood which is optional! This pattern was tech edited by Erin Battle of Yarn Matter.
