Crochet for a Cause 2020 Event and Pattern Roundup

Looking for crochet hat and scarf patterns for donation? Check out this crochet for a cause 2020 event hosted by Edythblayn! Get free patterns every Monday!

Crochet for a Cause 2020 is an event by Ashley from Edythblayn to showcase crochet designers while encouraging everyone to crochet for charity! Every Monday of June through August, two patterns (crochet hat pattern and/or crochet scarf pattern) will be featured from different crochet designers as crochet for charity patterns. The PDFs to their patterns will be available for free download for the week! You can crochet one of each pattern featured all summer long, or you can make 100 of a specific pattern, etc, and so on. By the end of summer, you will have several crochet hats and/or crochet scarves to donate to the local homeless shelter, hospital, cancer center, school, pregnancy resource center, etc of your choosing! Scroll to the bottom of the post for a list of charities where you can donate!

All the charity crochet patterns will be beginner-friendly to easy-intermediate in difficulty. The patterns will range in size and gender-target. Please only use cotton and soft acrylic yarn (*avoid wool as it can be irritating).

Monday at midnight EST through Sunday evening, each pattern of the week will be available for FREE download! The download will either be available directly from the designer’s site, or through Ravelry. >> If through Ravelry, please use the code CROCHETCAUSE

Self Care for Makers – #Makefoyoself

Have you felt burnt out from making things for your knitting or crochet business or for others? Here I share some great tips on self-care for makers.

Pin this post to your favorite boards

As makers and knitting designers/crochet designers, our craft is something we depend on and turn to for self-care. Crocheting and knitting a few stitches in uncertain moments is something that gives us calm and keeps us grounded. Whether we are making to sell our handmade items on Etsy or designing knitting patterns or crochet patterns, we spend a lot of time crocheting and knitting for others, which usually means we think of ourselves last. There is this concept of making something for ourselves as being selfish but I would like to change the narrative. I just want it to be something we do as a form of self-care! That’s where my hashtag #makefoyoself comes in.

This post may contain affiliate links from which I may get a small commission at no extra cost to you.

#MAKEFOYOSELF – What’s it all about?

I created this hashtag when I was feeling the burnout of being a maker. Designing was a whole new world to me and I was still trying to maintain physical item listings in my Etsy shop. I became anxious and stressed out because I was creating only for others. I lost my motivation. That’s when I decided to take a break and step away from everything and just work on a project for myself!

I decided to test the Tunisian Knit Cardi by Kelsey of @happily.yarn.after. This was the first time I crocheted a garment for myself! That’s when I got the idea to create this hashtag to not only remind myself but also remind other makers to take a step back and create for themselves. It doesn’t have to be a garment or something big, it could just be a small project such as an amigurumi or home decor item as long as you get that mental and physical break you need.

#MAKEFOYOSELF has over 200 posts now and keeps growing. I am so grateful for all of the makers who have contributed. Click the picture below to head over to the hashtag page and get inspired! You might just find your next project on there!

Self Care for Makers; More Self Care Tips:

Here are a few more self-care ideas that we can put into practice:

Taking a social media break especially when you need to.** This one is a little bit hard for us to follow especially when we are trying to build our handmade business but it is essential! It’s easy to fall prey to the comparison game and imposter syndrome and when you feel like those are creeping into your heart and taking away from your motivation to post, That’s when you know you need to take a break!

Other ways to engage in self-care include:

  • Color
  • Maintain physical boundaries
    • This means just being away from your kids/family members for a few moments in the day
  • Dress up
    • Get dressed and put some make-up on just for yourself.
  • Do a face mask/follow a calming skin-care routine
  • Read a few pages of a book
  • Put on your favorite TV show and do some knitflixing/crochetflixing
  • Listen to your favorite song
  • Meditate and pray

Self-care looks different for each person and what works for one person may not work for another person. If you would like more ideas on self-care for makers, make sure to check out my friend Stephanie’s blog post all about self-care for makers. She has even included some great mental health resources.

Check out this chat on YouTube I had with a fellow maker, Sarah of SEKHandmade on this topic of self-care for makers! Follow her on Instagram and Check out all her patterns on Ravelry here.

More recenly I also chatted with Ashley from theloopylamb regarding the makefoyoself hashtag and we even played a fun game (there may even be a discount code in there for you!). Check the video out here. You can find all of Ashley’s important links including her latest patterns here.

Materials

Hook: N15 Tunisian crochet hook with a. 12 in. Cord – here’s my favorite Tunisian crochet hook set

Yarn:
Bernat Blanket Yarn in Taupe
Lily Sugar N Cream in White
Lion Brand Yarn Go For Faux in Baked Alaska

Notions:
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Polyfil Stuffing
Large Pom Pom Maker
Locking Stitch Marker
2.5 in. Ribbon (Note: Optional, you could also opt to crochet a bowtie like my Striped Tunisian Bow-Tie)
Pipe Cleaner (Note: use for mobile ears if gifting to older children, if gifting to a baby I would recommend you leave the ears floppy for safety reasons)

About the Pattern:

This is a beginner level Tunisian crochet pattern that you can complete in a few hours. The pattern uses bulky yarn and works up super quick and makes for a perfect gift for the little ones in your life. You can make it with Bernat Blanket yarn and Lion Brand Yarn Go For Faux.

Initially, I made this bunny with Michael’s Sweet Snuggles yarn which is a super soft and squishy yarn. I liked the overall look but found it to be a bit bulky and the yarn is not easily accessible. It would also require a larger hook.

I decided to try it with Bernat Blanket yarn since Bernat blanket is a more accessible and readily available yarn and I love how it turned out! The finished bunny measures 18 inches from ears to feet and 10 inches across from one arm to the other arm.

Looking for a fun easy crochet bunny pattern? Join me for a Tunisian crochet along for Bubsy the Bunny made in 3 parts with full video tutorials on YouTube!

You will make the pattern as follows:

I have divided the following steps into three parts in videos I have uploaded to YouTube.

  1. Make the face and embroider with size 4 worsted weight yarn in a contrasting color.
  2. Continue making the neck and body.
  3. Continue making a mirror image of the neck and body (so it will be one long piece that will be folded over and sewn while stuffing with polyfill).
  4. Make legs with the Bernat Blanket yarn.
  5. Crochet arms and sew onto the body.
  6. Work ears and weave in all ends!

You will learn how to:

-Tunisian crochet foundation row and Tunisian Simple Stitch
-Increase stitches in Tunisian crochet
-Decrease stitches in Tunisian crochet
-Embroider a face onto a crochet project
-Make a pom pom
-Make a magic circle and crochet in rounds

Are you all about that scrunchie life? I am loving that this trend is coming back because as a kid I used to love scrunchies and would steal my mom’s scrunchies all the time. Now I can make my own! I have put together a full crochet scrunchie beginner video tutorial on my YouTube channel. All you need is some worsted weight size 4 yarn, an elastic hair tie, a crochet hook and about 7 minutes!

This post contains Amazon Affiliate links from which I may get a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Materials

Caron Simply Soft in Tweeds – Taupe colorway or a similar size 4 worsted weight yarn
Goody Elastic Hair Ties for Medium Hair
Clover 5.5 mm soft-grip crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors

I love that scrunchies are so versatile. You can wear them as a bracelet or wear them in your hair for different looks! For this crochet scrunchie pattern, I used the treble crochet stitch. This is a super fun stitch that adds nice length and gives a nice frilly effect. This crochet scrunchie is perfect to add to your store inventory or for markets! These can also be made with velvet yarn to give a luxurious effect. I have a different version of velvet scrunchies available in my Etsy shop for purchase (ship to US and Canada only).

Pattern:

Make a slip knot with the yarn around the elastic band leaving a 6 in. tail. Ch 3 and treble crochet around the elastic hair tie until there are enough treble crochet stitches to fill the band to your liking. Sl st into the first st and leaving a 6 in. tail, cut yarn. Weave in ends. Optional: Add a small amount of glue to the sl st join spot to secure the hair tie and let dry. I personally have not added glue but I have heard that this keeps the scrunchie secure.

  • The following instructions are implied:
    • The loop already on the hook at the beginning of the row counts as the first st.
    • Always TSS in the last st of the row, being sure to work under both loops of the st.
  • Return Pass: Follow the foundation row and each row with the Return Pass in the same color.
    • Return Pass Instructions: Ch 1, *yarn over, pull through two loops; repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the hook.

Abbreviations:

Sl st: Slip stitch

Pattern Instructions:

Ch 7 with Color A

Row 1 (Foundation Row): Pick up a loop in the back bump of each chain. Complete normal RetP. (7 sts)

Row 2 to 36: TSS across (7 sts). (or continue Tss across for the length needed to match your head circumference) For reference, my head circumference is 21.5 inches: and I continued the Tss rows for 20 inches. Leaving a long tail,, cut yarn (approximately 8 to 10 inches). This tail will be used later for seaming up the ear warmer.

Starting at one end of the ear warmer, count 2 rows up and count to the 4th stitch (this will be the center stitch). With Color B Make Bo in this st. Moving vertically, skip 1 st, sl st into next st and make Bo in the same st. Refer to this video for how to make a surface bobble st. Continue making bobbles until there is only 1 st remaining. Leaving a 6 in. tail, cut yarn. Weave in end on the backside of ear warmer. With the wrong side facing you, join the ends of the ear warmer together with whip st or using your preferred method of seaming using the tail left at the beginning. Turn right side out and enjoy your finished make!
